Hi everyone... I am very very happy to get admission in Victoria , British Columbia for my Masters in English Literature program. My university classes start in September. I have always always wanted to visit and live in Canada. I think its a beautiful country. And I am extremely delighted!!!!!! Yeayyy I have been there once, to toronto and windsor, when I was young. Went there to see the Niagara Falls with my parents. I am currently living in USA and have a few questions regarding my immigration to Canada. Ok so I would start with my questions. Please anybody who has the information, kindly help me.

1) How long would it take for me to get my student visa? I want to get it as soon as possible

2) I am coming to Canada with my husband. Should my husband get a spouse visa at the same time that I get a student visa? Or should he get it later?

3) After I get my visa, how soon can I come to Canada? I want to land there right now !!!!

4) After I start my education, how soon will I get off-campus work permit?

5) After I graduate, I would get a work permit as far as I know. For what period of time will that work permit be valid?

6) My husband has done his masters in Computer Science here from USA. He wants to work in Canada. In which city or province is he most likely to find a job? Where should he search for jobs?

I would be grateful to anyone who can reply to my queries.

Thank you so much

Hi Anya,

First of all congrats for your admit.
Please see my response below which might help you.

1) How long would it take for me to get my student visa? I want to get it as soon as possible
[Sushil] As you have got the admit for sept intake then you can apply for visa but i guess they will consider your application by June. Usually from India it takes 15 days to get the visa. It should be faster for US resident.

2) I am coming to Canada with my husband. Should my husband get a spouse visa at the same time that I get a student visa? Or should he get it later?
[Sushil] He can apply for spouse visa at that time but that can reduce your chances of getting visa as VO might think you wont leave the country. So better is to get your visa first and then get open work permit for your husband.

3) After I get my visa, how soon can I come to Canada? I want to land there right now !!!!
[Sushil] you can land anytime once you get your visa.

4) After I start my education, how soon will I get off-campus work permit?
[Sushil] After 6 months.

5) After I graduate, I would get a work permit as far as I know. For what period of time will that work permit be valid?
[Sushil] if you course is of 1 year you will get 1 year work permit after your studies or if you course is of 2 years then you will get 3 year work permit.

6) My husband has done his masters in Computer Science here from USA. He wants to work in Canada. In which city or province is he most likely to find a job? Where should he search for jobs?
[Sushil] Well for him Toronto and calgury are the best place to get the job for any computer graduate. There are few online job portals where he can look for the same.

i hope above helps.

@sushilsrk

Hi. Thank you so much :) And your answers are great and helpful. Just a few more things I would like to ask you. How does my husband apply for an open work permit? What is the procedure for that?

Also could you tell me what all documents I require for getting my visa? Could you send a complete checklist so I could start collecting my documents right away?

Where do you live in Canada?

Thanks once again :D
