Ok My wife and I have our marrage certificate, a letter outlineing my employment and ability to support my wife, and the recipt from her outland application for PR and my sponsorship. We will bring a few suitcases, her cat and dog(with papers of vaccination) and hope to come in to "visit" and wait out her PR application. Has anyone have experience with this and what issues /questions/ problems(or lack there of, we want to hear the good stories to) did you have coming accross the border?

Key things about our recent crossing:

#1: Be sure you do have your receipt for the PR application. Due to some last-minute confusion we didn't have ours.

#2: Make sure you don't have anything that's considered "furniture". They asked us about that specifically. (They didn't actually look through our entire carful of stuff, which is good, because it was very tightly packed and would have taken some time to re-pack.)

#3: My U.S. partner only got a 3-month permit when he asked for 6. The reason they gave was "insufficient ties to the U.S." His claim to be living with his father was about all he had. He had no job or property in the U.S. and actually no cash either. All of his extended family (except for me, his conjugal partner in Canada) lives in the U.S.

I'm worried about this too, but I've heard that as long as you don't act like you are moving 'for good' (furnature, etc) and you can prove a tie to the US (address, bills, etc) you will probably be ok. It's probably good to bring proof of finances, like bank statements and stuff that show that you and/or your wife has a savings account and can stay in Canada without working illegally. I'm anxious to hear more stories as well, as well as your own after you cross.

I have been engaged for a little less than a year. When I crossed over last summer, I told them I was engaged, had my cat and everything and said I was staying 3 months and had no trouble at all. Didn't even ask me if I planned on getting married during my stay!
