A co-signer must be the spouse of a sponsor. It is good to have a co-signer when sponsoring a family member where the sponsor does not meet the income requirements. The income of the sponsor and co-signer is combined to meet the requirements. A co-signer is also useful if the sponsor has not been in Canada long enough to have three years of tax returns.

A co-signer is NEVER used when sponsoring a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner.
