Please I need a clarification on this, can a student who is currently study in Canada for one year course extends his student visa, after he has finished the programme, so that he can do another one year course in another college?

After graduation in the second college, how many years Post graduate work permit will he get? (Remember he already did one year diploma in one school, and another one year certificate course in another school and province)

I am a bit confuse here, because CIC website says that Post graduate visa can only be issued for the duration of the course. In this case what is the duration please? Is it the total duration of the years he has studied or the current duration?

Prompt response will be appreciated!

Thank you all.

Total duration will be counted. 1+1 year study= 3 year PGWP.

Specific eligibility criteria

• If the program of study is two years or more, the student would be eligible for a three year
work permit.
• If the program of study is less than two years but at least eight months, the student would
be eligible for a work permit lasting for a period equal to the duration of their studies. The
validity period of the work permit must not be longer than this period. For example, if the
student graduated from an eight-month certificate program, they are only eligible for a work
permit of eight months' duration.

Exception: Students holding a one-year graduate degree from a provincially accredited post-secondary
educational institution in Canada (pursued full-time) after having obtained, within the prior two years, a
degree or diploma from an accredited post-secondary educational/training institution will qualify for a
three year work permit. This exception also applies to students who have left Canada temporarily
between the graduations.

Example: A student who obtained a one-year MBA from a provincially accredited post-secondary
institution in Canada after having obtained a one year university diploma, no more than two
years before obtaining the MBA, would be allowed to cumulate both degrees and therefore to
get a three year PGWP.

So judging by that, you can only combine two 1-year courses if the 2nd one is a graduate degree.

Thank you for your response. The first one is a post graduate diploma and the second one will be a certificate programme? So technically does he qualify or not for the three years PGWP?

As far as I know, a graduate degree would be defined as a degree where you would need a bachelors degree to enter that program.

According to the CIC link, if somebody first took a 1 year college degree or diploma of any kind and then a 1 year masters degree (graduate degree), they would be able to combine the two and get a 3 year PGWP. However, if they do it the other way around, first take the masters degree based on a bachelor they took in home country and then take a 1 year degree or diploma which is not a graduate degree and possibly in an unrelated subject, they would not qualify for a 3 year work permit.
