Hello everybody,

The father of my friend migrated to Canada beginning 80s and got Canadian citizenship and still living in canada.

My friend was born in US and got the Canadian citizenship through his father.

Now my friend and his french wife are expecting a baby delivery in france, will the child be eligible for Canadian citizenship? There is a doubt about it cause the grandfather and the father and the new child are all born outside Canada? Is there any link on Cic website concerning this? Many thanks.

The friend that gotten canadian citizenship through father is a 2nd generation Canadian. They cannot pass on Canadian citizenship. So the friend's child will not have Canadian citizenship. However the friend can sponsor the child for PR once they decide to settle in Canada. Once the child has PR, the child can then apply for Canadian citizenship.

The grandfather is a naturalized Canadian and can pass on citizenship. The father is Canadian by descent through grandfather thus "2nd generation" Canadian. The new citizenship law stop the generational passing of citizenship at that point.
