I have a son who I have adopted overseas, being born in Thailand to my wife from a previous relationship. He has recently been granted Canadian citizenship, but the certificate hasn't arrived yet, and therefore he cannot get a Canadian passport yet. On my wife's generic application form under dependents, it asks about a valid passport...well he has a valid Thai passport, but are they wanting me to write Canadian? Should I wait until he gets the Canadian passport before we go any further with this application?

Thanks in advance,

John

Which is the form number you are referring to? Also when you apply please attach copy of the letter you received after applying for your son's citizenship certificate.

It is IM0008..not sure if I want to put his Thai passport details in when we are planning on going to Canada as Canadians

In the generic form IM0008 you dont have to add your son as dependent as he is already a Canadian citizen. But you have to include them in the Additional Family information where they dont ask for passport details. This is how i did it.

So as to avoid delays and ensure I get it right, even though the oldest son was adopted overseas in 2007, he is now a Canadian citizen and carries my name. Can I assume that he doesn't need a medical check and he gets processed normally as a non-sponsored dependent? I really don't want to go through the process of having to legitimize him all over again.

Accurate advice here would be greatly appreciated.

John

Canadian citizen are not considered dependents for the application for PR - as they are Canadian, they don't need to be sponsored. So no medicals for them. They only go on the "additional family info" as part of your family, but not under the "principal applicant and his/her dependents".
Good luck,

I'm not sure how long you have been waiting for the certificate, but you can ask for a "rush procedure" if you explain that you are applying for PR. I would wait until you have the proof of citizenship at least - not necessarily the passport.

Unfortunately they messed up...sent to Canadian Embassy in Beijing, and then back to case processing center in Sydney Nova Scotia on April 11..by snail pace diplomatic bag...after their apology, they said they would send it to my sister's address in Canada..she can DHL it to Laos from there, and then we apply for passport in Bangkok...the joys of living remote.
