Hi everyone!

When I arrived in Canada, the Immigration issued me a study/ work permit for the lenght of my studies for one particular program (two months). However I've arranged an additional one month program preparation for TOEFL, so she issued me a Visitors visa for the period plus one month.

The thing is she told me I could change my status from visitor to student (again) if I decide to apply for university here. Is that accurate? I'm not sure I understood her okay, because I was in a hurry to catch my next flight and there was a big line of people behind me.

Tks! ;)

As per rules you can study in Canada for less than 6 months without study permit. So If you don't have a study permit and you are a visitor then you would have to leave canada in order to apply for Study permit. However, If you have already got Study permit for your study and you get admission in another college/university in some course then you can extend your study permit from within Canada.

Quote: "Most visitors to Canada are not allowed to work or study in Canada without a permit.
If you require a study permit or a work permit, you must apply for it before coming to Canada. If you are visiting Canada and you want to apply to work or study, you must leave Canada and apply from your home country. In some cases, working or studying without a permit is allowed"

Ok, but the thing is application process to the university I want starts in September, by them my permit will not be valid anymore and I'll only have my visitors visa valid.

From what I understand I can extend the study permit (actually it's a SW1) as long as I have it valid, right? What I want to know is if I can change from visitor to student. By the way, my visitor visa does not say 'cannot work or cannot study', the officer highlight that for me as she was explaining. I don't know if that's relevant. ;)

SW1 is not visitor visa, it is Student visa with work permit. Do you have SW1? When is it expiring? when is your study permit expiring?

As I said, I have the study/ work permit valid till august. From September on the officer issued me a visitor visa which expires in October.

I was told that I cannot change from visitor to student in Canada, I'd have to leave the country in order to do so, is that correct?
