I'm a Canadian Permanent Resident who has recently moved to the US on an L1 visa. I don't intend on meeting my PR residence obligations. I do, however, want to be able to visit Canada frequently as I have friends here. I also plan on marrying my boyfriend (who has a PR) within the next 3 - 6 months, although the aim for the next 12-24 months is to continue working in our current work location (US for me, Canada for him).
My boyfriend and my nationality is Indian.
Is there a graceful way to trade-in my PR for a Visitor visa? I see from the Canada Immigration website that "It is illegal to apply for a Visitor visa as a Permanent Resident". I can renounce my PR and then apply for a visitor visa, but the downside is that I won't be able to enter Canada while the application is in progress (which may take many months).
Additionally, we're planning on getting married in Toronto. Are there going to be problems if our marriage certificate is from Toronto but I give up my PR soon after the marriage? My boyfriend will continue to be a Toronto resident for the foreseeable future.
