I know we need a certified copy of our marriage certificate, but can I have the minister send a note when he sends in the paperwork? Or do I need to wait until we recieve ours ? This would save much time. I can apply much earlier this way. Especially since they are already sending me a certified document anyway. Should I call the town clerk on this?

I would suggest you not to send incomplete application, that is the reason many applications are returned, all the check-list items must be there. So you better wait till you get the certified copy of your Marriage certificate. I am assuming that your marriage certificate is written in other language other than French and English, because all translated documents should include a certified copy if you are not sending the original,
You also have the option to sent the original translated marriage certificate , not the original marriage certificate but the translation. In this case you don't need to sent a certified copy.

Actually, I am getting married in Northern VT ( halfway point between the families) so the document is in English. I'm just wondering if they could send me two of the same documents rather than making us request one two weeks later ( when we recieve ours).

If it is english to make your photocopies certified is not a requirement, but some applicants may prefer to make it certified.
I think two original documents can not be produced, you will have only one , so what you can do is when you receive your marriage certificate go to any public notary in your city, bring your original one and they can issue certified copy or you just send a normal copy of your marriage certificate as this will be sufficient.

Here is from the checklist for USA: Send photocopies of all other documents, unless instructed otherwise.

And here is from the general checklist: SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS: Send photocopies of documents, unless instructed otherwise.

In no place over all the checklist and guides, does it specify you need a certified copy of a marriage certificate, so obviously CIC does not require this. What you should do is wait until you receive your original wedding certificate. Then you can just make a regular photocopy of it and include it in your application.

Thanks Rob, I wasn't sure, I have been reading over so much paperwork and planning the wedding on top of that. So I must have misread it. But this is great news. I could, posssibly, file a whole two months earlier. Based on the State website, the turn-around for the certificate is fairly quick. And I have access to a copier. Plus, this saves me money, which is a very good thing.

Well i don't think it will save you much time. To get a wedding certificate certified you just need to take it to a local notary... and the whole process is pretty quick.

But yes i've heard they can be expensive (up to $100 for a certified copy) so you would definitely save some $$$.
