Certified copies of identity? - Citizenship certificate

I’m applying for citizenship certificates for my children who were born in USA. I’m confused if i need “Certified copies” of their identity documents. It says at the top of the checklist all documents certified but then for the “two pieces of identity” it only says copy, not certified copies. But that initial top of the checklist is confusing me if i need it certified or not. Anyone only submit photocopies and it was accepted? Or better to get it notarized?

You need certified copies of their birth certificates, but just plain copies of their ID.
