I have found very conflicting information. On on page I found on CIC it said nothing needed to be certified on another it says all of it has to be certified. Any one know which documents need to be certified for spousal sponsorship and which ones don't? I could just certify everything but I bet that will cost a bunch of money......

Follow the country specific guide. Some countries require that you send in either originals or certified copies for everything, while others only need photocopies.

I found 2 Canadian government guides on the government site saying different things which is why I was asking for clarification. The checklist I believe it was said nothing needed to be certified and then I found another list saying everything had to be.

you need the country specific guide for the country the applicant is from. perhaps you are looking at lists from different countries.

What country are you applying from? We might be better able to help you if we know this, then it is simple to find out what you need certified, exactly.

Applying to move to Canada I am the sponsor he is from the US

According to the document checklist, it only specifies copy of identity documents, certificates, etc. The only original it says for US applicants is the police check. You need to follow this country specific document checklist for your husband http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3910e.pdf

Certified copies are needed only for the documents which have been translated. If you didn't translate any document into English and your country specific guide asks for photocopies, a regular copy would do just fine.

Thank you that clears things up!

The document check list in the USA Guide actually says which copies need to be certified.

We certified:

Birth Certificates
Marriage Certificate
Passports

This is the link with the steps to follow PART 1 - 3:

Here is the link I followed when filling out my forms:

Here is the USA Guide:

"Assemble all your documents as listed. Check () each applicable item on the list and attach the list to your
documents (a paper clip will do). Send originals of the immigration forms (items 1 to 5 below) and police
certificates. Send photocopies of all other documents, unless instructed otherwise. If your documents are not
in English or French, send a notarized (certified) translation with a copy of the originals."

This basically tells me because it's in English I don't need to certify anything. That makes things easier!

I didn't feel comfortable with the wording so I certified my legal documents to be safe. Better safe than sorry was the way I looked at it. You are probably right though, but when I was filling mine out we were not 100% certain. You do what you feel comfortable doing. :)
