Hi there,

I am getting my docs ready for landing. I am now thinking about gathering docs to buy and insure a car in Canada. What documents should I bring to get the insurance quote as low as possible? Do they look at drivers licence history (I mean how long we possess the drivers licence) or at insurance history (accidents over a certain period of time)?

Thanks

Depends on where you intend settling. Here in Manitoba, if you are from a reciprocal license exchange country, you'll get 1 merit, which is essentially one year of driving without a claim. Insurance in Manitoba is run by the Provence. There is no alternative.

I will land in Ontario.

for Ontario, if you bring a driving history certificate for 3 years or more, this will help only to reduce the required time between G2 & full G license test. you should wait for 1 year once you finish G2 to apply for full G license.

insurance history will not be honored at all. the insurance for newcomers will be extremely high for the first period .the only way to reduce it is to enroll for a authorized driving school course. this will reduce the insurance upto 400 - 600$ as they claimed. you can't buy a car without G2 license. then you will be able to get an insurance quote accordingly.
