I am a Canadian citizen working with a UN agency. Currently posted in the US (diplomatic/G4 visa), but can be deployed overseas at any time.

We are considering applying for my wife's Canadian permanent residency. However, given the nature of my job, we don't anticipate moving back to Canada at least until retirement. Question - How will this affect her residency requirements (physical presence) to get her citizenship, eventually?

I know that residency requirements are ok if you or spouse is deployed overseas on a Canadian government job or for a Canadian firm, but nothing about UN family agencies. Does anyone have further information on this?

Thanks!

I think the first barrier you may encounter is getting your spouse's PR application approved.

To be approved as a sponsor who is living outside of Canada, you must provide evidence to demonstrate that you plan to return to Canada and make Canada your home once your spouse's PR status has been approved. If you have no plans to return to Canada to live in the near future, then you may have to wait until you actually plan to return before you sponsor.

To answer your other questions:

1) Yes - your spouse's PR residency requirement will be met since she will be residing outside of Canada with you - a Canadian citizen.
2) There are no special consideration for UN agency families when it comes to citizenship. To qualify for citizenship, she will have to physically live in Canada for 3 out of 4 years before applying.
