Hello,

Currently I am working as a "Fixed Term Employee" on a Work Permit with a canadian employer. As per my offer letter my term ends on Dec 31 2009. But my Work Permit is until Jan 31, 2010.

My employer would like me to continue working for another 1 week as a direct contractor. Can I work for one more week as a direct contractor as my work permit is till Jan 31, 2010.

I really appreaciate you quick response.

Thanks

You can continue to work until 31/01/10 but as an employee, not a contractor.

PMM

To add to what PMM said, no, you cannot work as a contractor because a contractor is "self-employed" and your work permit does not cover a new job, let alone self-employment.

If your employer wanted you to work an extra week, you could simply work another week under the same terms of your old contract. You would still be an employee. If for some reason your employer does not want to keep you as an employee, then no, you cannot work another week.
