Hi,
My husband and I are totally lost - this process seemed straightforward at the beginning, but it gets more & more complicated! I am Canadian - my husband & I got married in the US in Feb 2008. I was living in the US under a TN visa status and he was able to get TN dependent status. He is a British citizen. My daughter, who is 6, was born in the US and has American citizenship (however, both me & her dad are Canadian, so she qualifies for Canadian citizenship and that is pretty straightforward).
We are planning on moving back to Canada next month, as I am going back to graduate school. The application to sponser my husband looked pretty easy at first glance, but I'm starting to get really nervous that it will be more complicated than we thought.
My questions is: How long is the average processing time for him to get status in Canada? One place said 12-18 months from within Canada, another said a couple of months???
I read something about applying for an "open work permit" at the same time - what exactly is that??
If it takes 12-18 months, can he not work or do anything during that time??? Is he eligible for healthcare while the application is processing? What about my daughter - proof of citizenship takes about a year - can she get healthcare coverage while we are waiting??
As we're crossing the border with all of our stuff, will we likely have problems since he won't have started the application yet??
Any help/advice is much appreciated.
Thanks!
