Hello all! I have a lot of questions and dont really know where to start. I met my boyfriend in October of last year. He lives in Detroit and I am from Windsor, Ont. We want to move in together and get married, the whole thing. Also we are looking into going to school together. Im looking for clear, concise information on how to get him here permanently and also the best way to go about it. Is it possible to be common law? Should we get married first? Im confused and frustrated by the information I am finding. Thanks!

You have to have been living together for a year for common law. Since you live right across the border from each other, you could start living together now in either Detroit or Windsor without disrupting your lives much, if any. If you want to apply right away, you'd have to get married.

Hi, I'm having a similar problem under "I want to move in with my boyfriend".
It is so confusing and frustrating. Does he have to marry me before I move
up there in order to qualify as applying from outside Canada?

A relationship involving an American and a Canadian is the easiest of any for immigrating. Both partners can easily visit the other's country. You can come to Canada as a visitor and end up staying for a long time. Visit, move in together, and after a year you can apply as a common-law spouse; or get married, and you can apply right away. If the two of you live near the border, you can easily visit.

so we can just move in together? He wont need any documentation for us to co-habitate? That is really exciting and helpful.

he needs to have legal status in Canada, when his visit time expires (6 months) he has to apply for extension.

better read this all first, then if smthing is unclear ask questions.

Just keep in mind that they can 'visit' with you in Canada but that means they can't work or go to school there unless they get a work or student visa.
