Hi all,

So I've lived in Canada for 28 years of my life, born and raised. I moved to the UK about 6 years ago to help my mother who became ill. My mother is also a Canadian citizen and previously in Canada for 40 years. We're both in the UK right now and I have a stupid question but I would just rather have a piece of mind getting the answer. I've always had the plan to move back home to Canada, but I obviously had to stay in the UK longer than expected as the mental health care here is a lot better than in Canada but the plan was to always move back. My question is, is there any limit to how long you can live outside of Canada before you're not Canadian anymore or are you always a Canadian citizen? We're obviously Canadian but I'm just worried that our move back will present some issues. In short, will we be able to move back and also is there some sort of limit? Or will we always be able to move back to Canada being a citizen?

Thank you, any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

There's no limit - you can stay outside of Canada as long as you wish.

Having said that, you'll most likely have to wait three months after you arrive in Canada before you will be covered by the health care system again. So make sure you purchase private insurance to cover emergencies during this waiting period.

There are no limits. Just make sure you have a valid Canadian passport to board the plane.

Thanks guys! Got worried that we wouldn't be able to come back home! Also I forgot to mention that I've got a duel citizenship now as well because I had to get citizenship in the UK as well to stay. Hope that doesn't cause any issues to come back.

I've renewed my Canadian passport just last year and have a fresh 5 years. So all good there.

My wife (and sponsor) did the same thing. 9 years in the UK on FLR/ILR and then UK citizenship. No problem returning to Canada, with me in tow.
