Hi there..

About 2 years ago my accountant gave me bad advice after moving to Hong Kong in 2012 and told me to become a non-resident so I don't pay two taxes. I own a business and need to immediately become a resident again in Canada despite the fact I don't live here (I'm going to be continuing to live in Hong Kong but I need to pay taxes in both countries with the way my business is currently set up).

I've been looking online helplessly trying to find the documents to become a resident again (I am a Canadian citizen afterall), but all the links I get are to Permanent Resident card applications (which I don't need).

Can someone please point me in the right direction to find the documents I need and where to send them to?

Thanks

Most of us here have immigration expertise - but not international tax expertise for situations as complicated as yours. If I were in your shoes, I would find a good Canadian tax accountant with experience with non-residency and businesses in Canada. You could also see if you can find a Canadian tax forum. You don't want to get on the wrong side of CRA - so I would personally go with professional advice in this case. But obviously your call.

Good luck. Sorting out taxes sucks. My husband is dual (Canadian / American) so we already have to deal with that mess and it's relatively straight-forward compared to yours.
