I have a quick question that confused me and my husband on the Application form for Sponsorship.

My husband is a Canadian Citizen, and on the application form, it asks whether his Canadian Citizenship is by descent. I'm assuming that this is asking whether his parents are Canadian Citizens and if he was born in Canada. Is this right and if so, he ticks off Yes. Am I correct or not?

No, if he was born in Canada, he is a Canadian citizen by birth. If he had been born outside Canada and had gotten citizenship through his parents, he would be citizen by descent.

Right gotcha.

But there's no box to tick that says he's a Canadian Citizen by birth ... unless he already ticked that and I missed it! That's entirely probable given that I've spent hours on the application form tonight and my eyes are tired lol.

Thanks though!

mmmmmhhhmmmm... looks like I got this answer wrong myself, I did click yes. But then one of the copies I included was my wife's canadian passport bio page which shows where was she born (Toronto) and I assume CIC made the correction for me.
Thx for the clarification, Leon!.

When sponsoring a spouse, it does not actually matter. I am sure that a lot of people get it wrong. The only case where it actually matters is if a citizen by descent has a baby outside Canada, the baby does not automatically qualify for Canadian citizenship and must instead be sponsored for PR.

Ohhh okay, that makes me feel better! Thanks Leon!
