I was wondering if anyone knows if a baby born aboard is eligible to apply for Canadian benefits. My son is now 7 months old and we are currently in Mexico. I still receive benefits for my daughter while I am out of the country so I suppose that there is a possibility of being able to apply for the benefits for my son. I also know that the longer you wait to actually register your child the more you get in the first benefit. Would that apply to my son as well or no since he is out of the country? I imagine I would have to wait for his citizenship certificate but that isn't until 6 -8 months that I receive it. So would the first benefit that I get be a great amount? or would it just be the regular amount?

You and your child must be living in Canada to qualify for the Canada Child Tax Benefit. If you are living in Mexico, then you should no longer be recieving the benefits for your daughter. If Canada finds out that you recieved benefits while living outside of the country, you will be ordered to pay this money back.

No - your son does not qualify for the Canada Child Tax Benefit if you are currently living in Mexico. Again, you must both be living in Canada for him to qualify.
