Actually the article is half right. Canada is interested in skilled trades people and will be probably altering their immigration policies to allow more younger, skilled trades persons into Canada. On the other hand, Canada is getting tougher on language proficiency too.
After many discussions and surveys, it appears that immigrants that enter Canada with a high degree of English or French and a sought after trade skill are more successful overall, than those entering Canada with higher education degrees. This is probably due to the fact that many Canadian citizens pursue the same education routes as many immigrants and therefore secure those jobs first.
Some areas of Canada are desperate for qualified plumbers, dry-wallers, electricians, crane operators etc. In BC right now, the provincial government is actually rewarding students that do a trade skill at college with a cash incentive, if they complete and pass their courses. I know this as my son has just applied and been accepted to start a trades course in September. Upon completion and passing, he will receive a guaranteed apprenticeship with a reputable company and 2000 cad cash.
