Can you request an extension to send the FBI Certificate if there is a deadline?

I am waiting to receive the FBI Certificate, however the Visa Office (Guatemala) handling my application has given me a deadline of June 17th to send it in. I called te FBI Customer Service line today and they told me my application was still not in their system, since I sent in the last week of March and right now the turn around time is 13 weeks, the operator told me that I would have it probably by the end of June, does anyone know if they give you an extension to the deadline if you explain such a case to them? Should I send them a fax requesting an extension? Thanks for the responses.

CIC Buffalo's reply to my inquiry regarding documents that cannot be submitted was:

"You must follow the instructions in the application kit. If you are unable to supply any required documents or information, please enclose a detailed explanation."

This may also apply for those which cannot be submitted on time.
