Hi,

I will be sponsoring my husband to be. He is a US Citizen and we will file outland as we live in the US. We are getting married on 10/17/09 but would like to complete the medical and get the police certificates done before we file in November '09. Will this cause a problem given that we are not actually married yet? He actually has his medical scheduled for next week. Would hate to waste $400 :-)

It's not a problem if you do this before getting married.

However, keep in mind that these things do expire. The medical exam results are only valid for one year and if your application isn't finished processing by then, you will have to do the medical exam all over again. Also, the police certificates... well, they don't have an official expiry date I think, but there does come a point when they're too old to be accepted. Usually the recommendation is that they shouldn't be more than 3 months old when you submit your application.
If you're getting married in October, it seems a bit early to me to do these things.

I agree - medicals are valid for one year, criminal clearances for six months (and they should be less than 3 months old when submitted with the application). So postpone the medical and get the criminal clearances requests submitted about 6 weeks before the wedding. There's information on this page of the US2Canada website that tells you how to get FBI requests expedited. If you don't request that they expedite them, it will be 3-4 months to get them back - otherwise, 3-4 weeks.

If police certificate will expire before the decision would the IO request another one or the applicant can get another one and send it without asking him first

Thank y'all for the replies. I think we'll definitely wait then.
