Can I work while studying in Canada?

I am planning to study in Canada. I have heard that I can apply for off campus student work permit only after 6 months of study with minimum average score of 2.5 gpa in studies. Is it correct or not and if I apply under SPP than do I still need to wait for 6 months for off campus workpermit?
