Applying for permanent residency "INLAND" it is very clear that you may not attend a school in Canada or study in Canada. Are you allowed to study online through a school in your home country?

Would you be allowed to do a two years masters online, while in Canada as a visitor, the university is in the United Kingdom.

Do CIC ask that you do not study online?

I think since it is an out of country university that it shouldn't matter.

Just to clarify, as long as the requirements to complete a certificate/ course is under 6 months in duration, you are allowed to study in Canada. But since a Masters degree takes 2 years of studying, this wouldn't be so. An international university through online correspondence shouldn't pose a problem, I would think. If this is not the case, I'm sure a senior member will pipe up. Good luck with your studies.

tink23: Thank you for your response... I did not think that an international university, especially from the home country and being online, would pose a problem. I have not seen anyone that has done this though... I am hopeful that a senior member can confirm...

Thank you

It would probably be beneficial to also use the immigration call centre and ask if this is permitted, just to be certain.

Agreed, e-mailed my lawyer late on Friday so was hoping this forum may have some experience before I can do anything on Monday... In case anyone had the same question or had raised the question...

if a person can WORK for a non-canadian employer while IN canada as a visitor, then I don't see why the rule wouldn't be the same for studying. I think you are fine with taking classes online from a school NOT in canada. CBSA and CIC are more concerned about you studying IN Canada at a CANADIAN school without the proper visa to do so. You do NOT need a student visa to study at a school OUTSIDE of canada, whether it is online or not.

I checked this myself as I'll be starting a master's degree at a UK university too. Actually I called twice and spoke with 2 different agents, because you know how notorious they are for giving a different answer every time. Studying at a non-Canadian institution while an inland app is in process is not a problem. The only "problem" is that since you are now based in Canada, the British university may want to charge you international student fees.

MissRepresentation, Thanks for the post... When did you check this out? Are you starting your masters this year? I have already cleared the way with the university...

Neither CIC or CBSA will care about any course you are taking from a school outside Canada, via online studies. They only have strict permit rules for Canadian institutions.
