I applied inland and did include an OWP request with it but I am not comfortable with only having implied status for the whole time.
Can I still apply for an extension then?

Even if you apply for the extension you will still be under emplied as it will likely not come back faster then the OWP.They will likely come around the same time so,why bother right.

Well I mean I would rather not be on implied status for 7-8 months with the OWP
Where as with a regular extension request it would be maybe 2 and a half months until a decision which is most often positive.

The OWP and regular extension is a whole separate process. OWP is not looked at until First Stage Approval. Where as, a regular extension is usually looked at ahead of that.

I would just feel more comfortable have legal status and a document to show for it.

Well you can certainly apply for a visa extension, when they ask why explain you dont want to be out of status, and dont want to be on implied for that long of a period. While your waiting for first stage.
