Hi everyone,

I became a PR Oct 2015 under express entry and I got married in Nov. I was planning to apply for spousal sponsorship for my wife, she lives in Abu Dhabi, but processing times have shot up like crazy.

My question is, can I renounce my current PR status and reapply under express entry as married along with my wife so we avoid waiting for such a long time for a sponsorship ?
Will renouncing and reapplying cause issues for the new application?

Please advise

Yes. And there will be no repercussions if you renounce it and apply again. If you haven't 'landed' yet, you'll only need to send a mail asking for cancellation of COPR and refund of RPRF. If you've landed, follow this link ---> http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5781ETOC.asp

Read more here ---> http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/perm/card/renounce.asp

Having said that, consider the following before making this decision.

1. What is your CRS now?

2. What is the likelihood of getting an ITA at that CRS?

3. Have you considered applying for a TRV for your spouse so that they may live inside Canada temporarily while you find other legal means of extending their stay and probably get them a work status as well while they are waiting for the results of a spousal sponsorship application? These options are available for every PR/citizen (not guaranteed but possible).

4. Have you spoken with an immigration lawyer to understand the available options?

If you're basing this decision to renounce your PR status only on the basis of the CIC page highlighting the average time taken for a spousal sponsorship application from ADVO, you haven't thought this through completely.

All the best!

Thanks for the quick response,

I get about 434 points with just my degree, work exp and ielts score. But I live in Ontario now, and I intend to live here. So I'm hoping to get invitation from Ontario express entry that way I get 600 points for that and that will boost my score to get an ita on the next round of invites.

We did try applying for TRV just to get rejected.

But if I can apply for express entry after giving up my PR this would be the fastest option for me.

Any comments?

Sounds like a risk - what if Ontario doesn't send you an invite or tweaks their program in the time it takes for you to renounce your PR and get back into the pool?

EE might have made the PR journey shorter but they still aren't easy to get so think it through before renouncing your PR.
