Hi all I have a question. My wife and I married last year but we live in different countries. My wife is Canadian and lives and works in BC. I however live and work in the UK I’m a British citizen. We both have work commitments and see who finishes their work off first and whoever finished first will move to the other ones home. As my contracts are completed nearly.

I was wondering can I go to Canada to be with my wife on a 6 month visit then once I’m there can we apply for my PR. Then also while I’m there can I apply for a work permit if I’m not a skilled worker?

Thanks in advance

Sure your wife can sponsor you through the spouse program and applying as an inland application i you are in Canada can apply for a work permit for you which takes an average 4 months to get. No requirement for a spouse to be a skilled worker.

An Outland application with you outside Canada or in Canada doesn’t come with the ability to get a work permit.

In either case inland or Outland the average process time is quoted as 12 months although often less than this if straight forward.

If you are 30 and under the alternative is to apply for an IEC visa which is an open work permit so you could travel to Canada and work straight away whilst the PR sponsorship is applied for.

You as a visa exempt could travel as a visitor although never any guarantee of a 6 month stay that would be determined at the border.

Wow thanks for the quick reply 4 months that’s a long time I’ll go mad not working, is there away I can earn money I have savings but I like working well it’s better then doing nothing lol

Lol I wish I’m 44 years old
Then you will need to wait for the OWP (4 months). May be try to volunteer or do some renov/cleanup of your place.

Oh! You are already married. Why don't you apply "outland" a little ahead? Then you may already have your PR ready when you want to move.

Unfortunately then your only options are Inland or Outland sponsorship. So the question is, if you have enough savings, go for the Inland. If not, go for Outland. means you stay in the UK, but at least you still have money coming in until you get PR.

Thank you I think she has a long list of jobs and I’ve always fancied doing some volunteering work

They always do lol. As a note, I would watch what you are doing regarding volunteering. Even unpaid work can get you into trouble from what I have heard.

Ok thank you I’ll just sight see and do chores and wait. Can I apply for work permit and PR as soon as I land or do I have to wait.

You do not apply for anything. When you land, get your wife to fill out the spousal sponsorship application and add the SOWP (spouse open work permit) application with it. As YVR said, the SOWP usually takes about 4 months. After you get it, you can work, while the PR application is whirring along.

Here is the guide for her - https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...l-partner-dependent-child-complete-guide.html

Enjoy your sight seeing!

Sorry to re-cap when I land in Canada, shall I book a return ticket and show the border gaurd and say I’m going back to uk after, shall I tell them my intent

Have you ever been to Canada before to visit your wife? Did you get married here or the UK?

Yes we got married in Vancouver last April and been there 4 times last year and she came to the uk 2. Shall I tell the border guard my intent or just say I’m going back in 6 months.
