Can I go to India for 6 months after getting work permit

Hi,

I am a student here in Canada. I will be getting my work permit soon. After I get my work permit can I go to india for 6 month? My Canadian employer allows me to work remotely. I heard that in general it is not a good idea to leave Canada for more than 6 months as we loose out on many benefits. What are your thoughts on this.

You may lose your health coverage and need to reapply. There are residency obligations that you need to meet to qualify even if you have a valid provincial health card. If you have not met your residency requirement and leave Canada for 6 months you could be asked to pay back any services you have already received. You will also have to contact CRA to determine whether you will still be a resident for tax purposes if you leave Canada for 6 months. Depending on the answer how you are paid may need to change. Will you still be keeping a home in Canada?

thanks for the reply. I am on rent in Canada. Don’t have my own home. I want to go to India for my marriage but it’s so scary todo anything now

If you leave Canada you essentially need to be prepared that it may be difficult to return for some time.
