Hi,

Currently I'm in Japan, and coming back to Canada in August.

I have a visitor visa expiring this September. I was supposed to extend it online because I wanted to stay in Canada after September, but I realized I can't do it outside Canada.

I have an eTA. When I return to Canada, by plane, in August, can I get a new visitor visa on arrival, even though I already have one that is expiring in less than a month? If not, what should I do?

Thank you.

You cannot apply to extend your visa regardless of whether you're inside or outside Canada.

If you're in Canada, you can apply to extend your visitor status. Two different things.

When does your eTA expire? When does your passport expire?

You would not get a visitor visa when you arrive. You would get visitor status.... for how long.... that would depend on the officer you meet at the airport

My eTA and passport expires in 2020. Thanks for your reply!
Like stated earlier, as you are visa-exempt, you can travel using your eTA.

You won't get a visitor visa. The length of your stay will be determined by the visa officer when you arrive i.e. you will then have visitor status for that length if stay
