pls I intend to go for a visit in US in December but my passport will expire in August September 2015. I understand that a minimum of two years visa is issued in first attempt. Do you think I have a chance since I will have less than 2 years left by then?

A visa can never be longer than the validity of the passport

Please what do you suggest I do because I need to be in US in December. I would have a year and eight months left before my passport expires

u need to renew ur passport before u apply for visa.

My passport expires in 2014 but my visa validity is 2015. This is Canadian visa I am referring to, however in case of US as well it is not an issue since US offers 10 years tourist visa.

Since passport can not be renewed at least 12 months prior hence you can go ahead and apply for visa.

Sorry, but you are wrong there. Passports can be renewed for reasons of being lost/stolen, too many stamps and no pages left to put stamps in, if you can prove you need two passorts and other reasons. I had miine renewed in June this year and it was valid all the way to early september 2015. More than 2 years left on it, in other words.

Not true. In the case of US visit visa (B1/B2), visa is issued for a certain duration regardless of the expiry date of the passport...unless it's expiring within next 6 months. My Indian passport is valid until 2016, I got a 10 year multiple entry US visa which expires in 2023.
Basically, once your current passport expires and you get a new passport, you just need to carry your old passport along side (the one in which the visa stamp is placed) whenever you're travelling to the US.

I thought you had to renew it with a new passport. I had one but never bothered to renew it.

Seriously!? I still have the passport with the multiple entry visa.

Dang. Can't find it.

ameet747 is correct. US visa will be granted for the full duration regardless of the expiry date of passport.
