Hello,
My partner and I got married two weeks ago and we've not received the marriage certificate yet. His legal status expires within a week.
I was wondering to provide CIC with the copy that the marriage officiant gave us on the day of marriage.
Is it possible to do so? Because i dont want him to lose his status and go back.

Thank you

No, you cannot. It specifically says on the checklist that using that is not acceptable.

Were you cohabiting for 12 months or more? If so, you could possibly apply first in the common-law category and update your file later with the wedding certificate. If you did not cohabit for 12 months, I don't think you can apply without the original certificate.

From CIC website: "For spousal sponsorships, make sure you include a valid marriage certificate or proof of registration of your marriage with your submission. A record of solemnization (obtained in Canada) or marriage license will not be accepted as proof that the sponsor and applicant are married."

Another option for you would possibly be to apply for an extension of his current status. If you apply before his status expires, he will be on implied status until he gets an answer from IRCC. That would possibly let you enough time to receive your wedding certificate.

If married in ontario, you can call them and ask fr a rush. They will ask you to fax them over proof that you need to in a rush... we were married on feb 4 and had it in hand feb 18... it was sent on feb 6 the request and then i called when i knew that it was delivered and they send it via snail mail...
