Please I will like to know if I can apply for Canada study permit in Ghana if I carry a Nigerian passport ? This is because I intend to start my programme in January and I understand that it takes nine weeks to process visa in Ghana while it is 21weeks in Nigeria .i need advice on this . Thanks so much

You can apply for a study permit in Ghana if you are currently living in Ghana legally and have been allowed into the country for a period of at least one year.

I do visit Ghana once a while .do I have to live there for a year ?This is because we are neighbors and do not require visa to live in Ghana if u are a Nigerian

You can't apply as a visitor to Ghana. You would actually have to be living there as either a student or worker or a temporary resident who as been allowed into the country for at least a year. Based on the information you have provided, your only option is to apply through Nigeria. It doesn't matter that you don't require a visa to visit Ghana.

Ok .thanks .but do u think if I apply in Nigeria in September that I would be given visa before the January start date of my programme considering the processing time for Nigeria ?

Yes - if you apply in September there should be more than enough time for your visa to be issued before the start of your classes in January.

Scylla although your advice is based on what should obtain but the Canadian embassy in Nigeria have negative reputation for delaying applications and don't respect timelines.I know a number of people who withdraw their applications for visit since their Visa or Passport was not released months after the planned visits had passed. A friend once applied for study Visa and did not get any response until 6 months after. Anyway let him try his luck!

Another thing I guess he can try is the online application which is faster but in Nigeria, has a very high percentage of refusal which makes people avoid it but like plague. It is faster for those who worries about time.

Again, without being admitted into Ghana for at least a year, applying through this office isn't an option for you.

Scylla is on the spot you cannot apply through Ghana without residing there legally. You can try your luck by applying in Nigeria immediately. In recent times I know of 2 people who applied in Lagos Nigeria but the communication they got from the embassy showed that even though they submitted their application in Lagos,it was transferred to Ghana(may be to reduce backlog in Lagos)and of course it came back early. You may be lucky to be selected as part of those to be transferred to Ghana for treatment even though you submit your application in Nigeria and you need to do it on time for September 2014 entry goodluck!
