Can I apply for more than one work permit?

Hi,

I am from the UK and turn 30 in July 2019. My employer has offered to sponsor and send me on a work permit through them at the end of 2019. I am concerned though, if my employer does not follow through on this promise I will have lost the chance to obtain the IEC work permit.
Should I apply for the IEC work permit just in case? If I do, will this mean I can't then go through a sponsored work permit with my current employer?
