Hello, I'm an Australian currently holding a working holiday visa that expires in May this year.
Circumstances with family required me to return home, but in June I wish to return to Canada to continue working and travelling.

My question(s) is, can I apply/or begin the process for a working holiday visa (IEC) even before my current one has expired? Or will have to wait till my current one to expire before I apply for a new one (which I hope not because it would be too late in that case)

Any advice and answers would be greatly appreciated, for I am unsure as to what to do.

Thank you very much for your help and time.

You can apply before your current one expires.

1. Except that Australian citizens are only allowed one IEC. It would appear that the OP used his IEC in 2015 and the rules state

"Note: As an Australian citizen, you may participate in the Working Holiday category only once. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may participate in IEC one more time through the International Co-op (Internship) category.

If you participated in IEC before 2015, you are eligible for a final participation of up to 24 months in the category of your choice."
