Can a British Citizen get Implied Status?

I'm a British citizen and arrived in Canada on July 1st, exited and then re-entered on the 8th which is the last stamp that's in my passport.

From this, I assume I must leave on January 8th but would like to apply for the 1 year open work permit at the end of January and would like to stay here until then.

I've spoken to a lawyer who told me that I can apply for an extension and I would get implied status during the 80 days it would take CIC to process my application. From reading the application form however, I'm not sure whether I would be allowed to do so as it seems to be for people wishing to apply for or extend their temporary resident permits. I don't have one of these as I'm British.

So does this matter? Would I just get implied status from the time I apply, even if I shouldn't be applying and would get rejected?

Would this affect my application for an open work permit?

Thanks in advance for anything you guys may be able to help with :)
