I havent' done this in so long. I brought my husband 3 years ago. We're about to apply for his Cad Citizenship, but would like to bring his younger brother & sister to Canada to live with us. They are 14 & 16.

Family sponsorship? Timelines? Difficulties?

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks so much.

Unless they are orphans, you can't sponsor them.

why not? that does not make any sense to me. is that a stupid question?

Because that is the way of Canadian Immigration law. The only way they can be sponsored, is they are orphans or they are included in a sponsorship for the parents.

Dear PMM,

So you are saying if I sponser my Mother and add my younger brother name (age 17) to her application (father died) is possible???

what if the application takes more than a year and brother's age reach 18????

I live in Regina, SASK.

Please clarify

You can include your brother in your mother's sponsorship application provided he is under 19 years old at the time the application is received. His age is locked in at the time you submit the application. Note that parent sponsorship is currently limited to 5,000 applications per year and the cap for this year has already been reached.

Once an app is submitted for parents, any dependent children under the app have their age locked in as of the date the app was first subnitted. So even if the app takes 5+ years to process and child is over 22 or 23 yrs old when it's finally approved, they will still be considered a dependent based on their age at the beginning.

The only thing that makes children lose their dependent status during processing, is if they get married or become officially common-law with someone.
