Under the country specific guide for my wife ( applicant )
9. IDENTITY AND CIVIL STATUS DOCUMENTS says

Provide photocopies of the following document confirming the relationship between you and each of your family members

Birth certificate and or baptismal certificate.............and it mentions several other documents

and it also says see table at the end of this appendix for issuing authorities

that table for Costa Rica only says how to obtain a Marriage certificate at the registro civil

So I am wondering if her birth certificate is necessary and if so does it need to be translated? does the copy need to be a certified copy?
the guide only says provide a photocopy
any help is appreciated, I hope this post hasnt confused you as much as me lol

Yes, you need to submit her birth certificate. It can be a copy, but it must be a copy of the certified/official document, and yes, it needs to be translated to English.

Yes, we did that, and they returned it at the end of processing. Make sure you won't need it for anything else, though!

Hi guys,

I hope you don't mind me asking a question as well. Upon reading this thread, I was I bit confused. I remember thinking that "a document confirming a relationship for you and each of your family members" did not refer to spouses. How does a spouse's birth certificate confirm their relationship to you? It confirms a relationship for a child, but not a spouse. We did not send this document. I went over this a million times and it did not make sense. Am I mistaken and should I have submitted my spouse's BC anyway?

Thanks in advance and all the best to you. :)

A BC is requested to confirm identity/civil status, as well as relationships in the case of dependent children. For spouses the main part is obviously identity/civil status.

I hope we can submit this at a later date then, I thought passport would be sufficient for identity proof. Anyway, we will resolve it one way or another when the time comes.
Thank you very much for your reply CharlieD10. :)
