Hi everyone, I am from Indonesia and I am applying for a study permit to Canada for this coming June. I am doing the application process through online so I could save the trouble of going back and forth to VAC. I am having some troubles though regarding my biometrics requirement.

While logged into my CIC account, my application status under Biometrics state: "We do not need your fingerprints. We will send you a message if this changes." By this, I assume I do not need to have to do my Biometrics. The application status right now says: "We are processing your application. We will send you a message when there is an update or if we need more information from you." and is currently processing my background check

However, I received an email from JKRTAIMMIGRATION@international.gc.ca that states: "As an Indonesia passport holder, you are required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) as part of your application. This requirement took effect on December 31, 2018." The email also explains that I have to pay $85 for the fees and I will have to send it back to them for an instruction letter to schedule a biometrics appointment.

What does this mean? Do I have to do the biometrics or not? I thought any instructions would be sent to my CIC account and not through email? Anyone with experience or insight please help!

Yes, you have to send biometrics. This new rule was in enforced on the 31st of December for the remaining regions not covered. There is a separate 85 dollar biometric fee. Once you book an appointment and pay the fee, you will get a letter and you have to go to a VAC office to give your biometrics.
