Hi everyone!

So my girlfriend is from Mexico and is coming here to begin studying in September this year or possibly earlier if she decides to do an IELTS course. I am a permanent resident but have one year left on a 5-year bar as I too was sponsored at by a Canadian.

My question is about the best approach here. I can sponsor her as of April 2019. She is taking a 2-year course here. If she were to come here in May would the time spent together before my eligibility to sponsor her count for common law? I know if she does the IELTS course here she can't work but we would be living together from that date. In Sept she would have a student visa with a 20 hour work limit but the plan is to get her sponsored asap by me.

Any suggestions would be great!

How can you sponsor in April if you have only completed 4 year of the 5 year sponsorship ban? I’m confused.
And have you ever lived together for 12 months?

I think you meant you can sponsor as of April 2020? If she comes this may, your 12 month requirement for common-law starts as soon as you start living together so you would be able to apply may 2020 for common-law
