Hello,

I am aware of the 20 year undertaking.

I would like to know what government programs are considered "social assistance"?
Is provincial health coverage considered social assistance?

What are the other government benefits they can avail that are not considered social assistance?

Thank you.

Look at senior benefits for the province you are living in? Haven’t worked in Canada so not eligible for CPP or OAS (unless have lived in Canada more than 10 years). May be eligible for a drug supplement.

All seniors above 65 are entitled to some sort of subsidized medication cost. You just need to show your health card at the pharmacy. In general you are expected to pay for all the living costs and the huge benefit is the ability to live permanently in Canada and take advantage of the partial Medicare available in Canada. Families are quite lucky that parents will also now be able to benefit from some dental coverage. Families sponsoring parents will likely discover that it can be quite expensive to grow old in Canada and there are many things that are not covered by provincial and federal governments. The LICO are really not enough to support a senior in Canada.
