Hey all, I have pretty much established that I am a Canadian Citizen by Descent. My mother is a Canadian citizen and was so at the time of my birth. I was born in the US and have lived in the US most of my life, except for 1984-1989 which we lived in Canada. My mom moved to the US from Canada when she was 9 yrs old, returned to Canada 1984-1989 and has lived in the US since 1989. I was born in 1980. I have taken the quiz and it is likely I am a Canadian citizen by descent since my mom is Canadian. My Grandmother (deceased) was also a Canadian citizen.

That being said, I am wondering if there is any benefit to applying for proof of my Canadian citizenship? I have no relatives in Canada and do not plan on moving there. I do enjoy visiting the Niagara Falls area, Toronto, etc and there are other areas of Canada i would love to visit / vacation. I have a US passport and getting into Canada is not an issue. Are there any benefits to applying for my proof of citizenship, other than just being able to say I have dual citizenship :) Not sure if I want to pay the fee and gather the documents unless obtaining proof has some sort of purpose for me. Thank you!

Personal Opinion:

Surely enough, your kids could benefit from the Canadian Citizenship. I mean it's an advantage. Here is how I see it:

- Colleges/Universities are cheaper in Canada
- Job market is not as fierce as in the US (experience from wife and friends)
- health care benefit (if they decide to stay in Canada). You will, of course, declare non-resident status if you decide to go for the Canadian citizenship since you live in the US.

Some disadvantages of getting the Canadian:

- You will have to start doing your taxes. Even if you are a non-resident of Canada and have no sort of income in Canada. But you pay no taxes and you get no health benefit.
- Weather. If you or your children don't like snow, rain or cold temperatures.

That's all I can think of.

It most likely won't pass on to any kids since OP already obtained citizenship by descent.
