Hello. My fiancee and I would like to move to Whitehorse, YT, ideally. I have an MS in Library Science and have worked for 4.5 years at the New York Public Library. She has a BA in photography and has been working at the Museum of Modern Art for the same length of time. Any advice on Yukon/Whitehorse, smaller locales in general, or our work experience would be welcome. We don't want to live out in the woods, but neither do we want a great big city. We've had our fill of big cities. We want the North.

Here a couple of newbie questions, the first of many to come.

We plan to marry in January of 2014. If we plan to submit the application sooner than that (when they begin accepting them again, early next year), I'm guessing it would make sense for us to go ahead and officially get married at the courthouse before the actual ceremony in 2014. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a mortgage. I have about 40K equity. Other than that, I have essentially no savings and a bit of credit card debt. (I bought the place less than two years ago, and more recently the engagement ring.) Would it make sense to wait until the debt is paid off and I have some actual money in the bank, or is owning my home enough for the application?

Thanks in advance.
