I married my wife (Canadian citizen) last year and began my 2 year working holiday in February of this year. I am English.

What is the best way to get my citizenship?

Thanks in advance

You don't qualify for citizenship at this time. You have to become a permanent resident first. Best option for becoming PR is for your wife to sponsor you through the spousal sponsorship stream. Once you've become a PR and have lived in Canada for several years - you'll qualify to apply for citizenship. But forget about citizenship for now - that's a long way away. You need to aim for permanent residency first.

Think in terms of maybe best case 2021-2022 by the time have applied for PR, then accumulated the 3 out of 5 years actual physical residence in the country before the citizenship application. The physical residence is one of the key parts of applying for citizenship, keeping precise records of any trips out of the country.

The OP may be able to claim some credit for being on the IEC work permit towards the 3 years at half a day for each complete day to max equivalent 1 year, however the precise rules for the upcoming citizenship changes (C6) are still awaited on the CIC site other than a lot of speculation that is around.

As Scylla says getting citizenship is a long term plan, focus 100 percent on getting PR first as that has its challenges.

What can I do to ensure that I am able to stay in Canada and work even when my IEC comes to an end? Will I have to leave?

Thanks for the responses and answers already!

As you have already been told, spousal sponsorship.
