I am planning to immigrate to Canada from India as a dependent on my wife. However, right now I am in a lot of debt with no job. If all my debt in India goes to write off status will it affect my immigration status ??

Serious question. If you cannot afford to live in India, how will you be able to live in Canada?

Is this spousal sponsorship?

As long as she is financially stable, it shouldn't really matter then. Are your debts shared since you are married? I assume she is aware that you cannot get Welfare for a minimum of 3 years and she has to pay for everything if you don't have a job. I don't know if you become bankrupt that changes stuff though. She cannot be on welfare either when sponsoring you.

I also assume she is a PR or a citizen to be able to sponsor you.

She is the primary applicant for a PR. I am going to be the dependent. I had to quit my job due to retrenchment. That's the cause of all the agony. However, while migrating to Canada, both of us will be getting a job. How does bankruptcy in my current country affect my immigration status ??

P. S. None of our debts are shared. The bad debts are mine alone.

Sounds like you're going through Express Entry, correct?

Bad debts alone will not affect your immigration status. The primary applicant has to show enough settlement funds, and both of you have to have clean police/medical records. Other than that, your financial status will not affect her application.

Don’t you have to list all savings, debts, loans, etc. on the application? Guess not if you are the dependent. Assume your creditors know where your family lives. Getting a job in Canada may take a while and won’t necessarily pay well plus Canada is expensive so paying off your debts once you get to Canada is not always realistic. I’d be arranging payment plan know if possible. Are you looking for employment now? Anything can help.
