This is a question regarding section 9.

"Previously sought refugee status in Canada, or applied for a Canadian immigrant or permanent resident visa or visitor or temporary resident visa?"

Do study permits and post graduate study permits fall under the category of temporary resident visa? Or is a permit something different altogether?

I am unsure if I should answer yes or no to this question...

Perhaps this thread will help? It is a confusing question and I am not sure of the answer. You can always attach an explanation that clarifies what you mean.

Thanks for that thread QC. Then I'm not sure what you should put :)

Hmmm. I guess I will check "no" and then on an attached sheet of paper say that I have had a study permit, and from what I understand a permit is not the same as a visa.

( I am American and have never had to get a visa to get into Canada )

One more question....

for the question "detained or put in jail?"

In Canada, in 2004 a police officer stopped a myself and a friend, we were walking home from a pub quite late at night.

They had reports of graffiti in the area and stopped to ask us questions and see if were were the graffiti offenders. ( We were not!!! .) after asking a few questions and running my ID they let us go.

Is this being detained???

I really don't know, but hopefully someone with legal experience will be able to answer this one.

The safest thing is to put 'yes', and then give the explanation. This way if they think you should actually have put 'no', you will simply have made a harmless mistake.

Here, I would put 'no'.
