Hello all. Yet another question from me :) My question is: If I want to assume my American husband's last name (that is on pretty much all my ID, except for my birth certificate), is there a bad time or a good time to do this--before, during or after sending the PR in? Want to do this, but also don't want to create any more PR headaches--there are enough already;D

Best before but you can also do it at any stage.

are you the sponsor? if you're the sponsor, it doesn't matter when you change your name, and i don't think CIC needs any proof of it. once the sponsor's approved, cic really only cares about the applicant. it may be helpful to send a copy of your new passport, but i'm not sure if it's required.

if you're the applicant it's far less complicated to do it before getting approved for PR. it's pretty simple to do. it only requires the applicant to send a copy of the new passport to the visa office.

I am the sponsor. I guess I'm just confused as to what name I write on the app, if I do it beforehand. I'm just assuming his name, not legally changing my name. Lol what is my real name? And uh-oh... I don't have a passport at the moment--is that going to be a problem for being a sponsor? Didn't think of that :/

well as a sponsor you are suppose to provide legal identification. most people use a passport. i'm not sure if it's the only required option for sponsors. so whatever is on the required identification you submit as the sponsor should be the name you put on the application. if you plan to change your name, then get your name changed on that id before you submit your application. it you put a different name on your application than what is on your legal identification, i would imagine that will cause confusion and possibly delays.

You need to put your current name on the app. If you take your husband's name later, you can simply send an email to CIC with an updated ID.

The sponsor is not required to have a passport.
