One guy I know entered another country using a fake passport, and admitted it on the application. He was not charged with this in the other country - in fact, the gov't never discovered it was a fake passport. But he was there for 7 years, so how to account for this time in your personal history if you don't say where you actually were? And that requires a police certificate, which they can't get because he was on a fake passport.
That's pretty much our problem. We were honest to account for how we met. That's the only way we could have proven the length of time we knew each other and have photos to submit. My husband ended up getting the criminal clearance with the personal information he originally entered the country with. We wrote statutory declarations explaining everything. It only amounted to a mountain of problems.
What bothers me the most is that the last day I was in Accra, I ran into someone I knew abroad (in the same city I met my husband in). He was picking up his visa to go be with his Canadian partner. Although for much less time, he did what my husband did as well. However, so that he wouldn't have problems, the application was filed saying they met online. I'm still disgusted to know that they are in Canada together after getting the visa because of lies.
Sometimes, I wish we lied as well. However, I stand firm that honesty is the best policy.
