If you need to add a child to your application because they are born during the process you can. You would need to contact CIC as soon as possible after the child's birth (they can't add an unborn child).

Found something here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/op/op02-eng.pdf

7.7. What to do if a family member is added to an application during processing?
New family members must be added and non-accompanying family members can become
accompanying family members on an application of a person applying in the family class during
the processing of an application. There may be occasions when a child is born to an applicant
subsequent to the issuance of the visa but prior to obtaining permanent resident status. In these
cases, it may not be necessary to create a new file and start processing all over again. All that is
needed is to have the child added to the sponsorship, the processing fee paid and a medical
examination done.

Are you a Canadian citizen? If so, the baby would be Canadian too. You would have to apply for their citizenship card after the birth. While you would want to inform CIC of the birth, nothing changes if the baby is Canadian.

the baby may not be a citizen in all cases, even if one of the parents is a citizen - check the rules for citizenship on the CIC website to see if your child will qualify.

I am in the same boat - I am a canadian citizen and unless I leave my partner in the US while I move to Canada alone before I give birth, I will need to add my baby to his application. I believe that the baby can be added until the primary applicant has landed - so, in our case, we will notify CIC immediately about the birth, and pay the fee, and have the medicals done.

I'm sure this is a very common occurrence - especially since expecting a baby is a pretty big motivator to finalize arrangements for your partner/spouse to be in Canada permanently. I spoke to an immigration lawyer because I had some questions about our case, and she seemed to think this was not a problem in the least, and would only take an additional month or two to process. After all, they can't do a lengthy background check on a newborn baby!!

yes I am a canadian citizen, and I am living in canada, but if my wife is pregnant (she is in costa rica) the baby would be born in costa rica, how would the baby be a canadian citizen?

if your wife is pregnant with your baby, then it is the child of a canadian citizen, and a canadian citizen by descent (assuming you were born in Canada).

I'm sorry, I just assumed you were a citizen by being born in Canada, not naturalized.

If you were indeed born in Canada, your baby would be Canadian no matter where he's born.
