If you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, apprenticeship is a great way to get to a good position in Canada. You often start out as a helper making just as much money as any other helper. If you are a good worker and you ask to apprentice, it's not a problem. You will go to school for a couple of months every year and during that time, you get Employment Insurance. Every year, your pay will increase substantially and once you are done, you will be a sought after tradesman and making good money.

The problem for immigrants from some countries is that they are afraid to get their hands dirty, they look down on physical labour jobs and would even prefer to work in a call centre for close to minimum wage. That is their choice. For some people, it might be that they have a degree already and they don't want to give up hope to get a job in their original field but there is no problem looking for a job in your original field alongside with doing apprenticeship. If you find one, you abandon the apprenticeship and if you don't find one, you will still be in a good position.
